Requires a little skill and some tools to install. Garage door professionals recommend this device. This device allows you to keep your red emergency handle pull cord attached.

This simple, inexpensive alarm is available from Amazon and is relatively easy to install. It triggers when the door is opened, or when motion is detected inside your garage. It arms/disarms with a wireless keychain remote, and the siren is separate from the trigger device (so burglars cannot deactivate it). Best of all it’s LOUD and will wake you up in the middle of the night when it’s triggered.

This heavy steel mesh, if properly installed, can prevent access through garage air vents while allowing safe air flow. It’s also available at local hardware stores.
